Thoughts about corn

Image
Recently we got fresh corn into the commissary. I know this is kind of an odd thing to write about but…   I stood there looking at the corn and feeling kind of emotional.   I’ve had a lot of therapy, so I practiced what I had worked on. I acknowledged my feelings and took a minute to just sit with them. So there I was emotional in the produce section. I thought about why I might be feeling that way and realized it reminded me of home and growing up. Where I grew up there were corn fields everywhere. I took these photos on my trip home.                  I remember “putting up’ freezer corn every year out of our fields. I remember stealing corn. It was something most people did. Stopping on the side of the road and grab a couple ears for dinner. Its kind of a funny thing how many emotions can be attached to an object or a food. I grabbed some corn that d...

Talk on Finding Joy in the Journey

Image
Sometimes I feel bad when I write a talk. My talks are often not scripture heavy. As I pondered this I realized and admitted I am not a scriptorian but I focus more on the application of principals. In the seminary manual it often wants the focus to be on the application of what is learned. As an example, while at summer camp I learned to say the chemical compound potassium permanganate. While I learned the words, I have no real application other that it is helpful in teaching the chemistry merit badge and impossible to get in Japan unless you know a guy who did a thing. Wouldn’t it have been more beneficial for me to learn its process and how it can be used and then put it into practice. The same is true with the scriptures. The practice of what is learned is more important than remembering what chapter and verse it’s found in. The talk I will base my talk on is by President Monsen and titled Finding Joy in the Journey President Monsen said. This is our one and only chance a...

Talk on the word Hineni

Image
On several occasions God ask Adam, Abraham, and Moses "Where are you?" If you take that literal its nonsensical. If God is all knowing doesn't he know where they are? Perhaps the question isn't about geographical location perhaps he is asking where you are in your moral decision making. One for Isreal site says  They answer with the Hebrew word Hineni which means Here I am. (this is a powerful word) There is a powerful word in Hebrew that sums up three words in English. The word is  Hineni  (הנני), which means “Here I am!” But you’ve got to watch out how you say it, because it is a way of expressing total readiness to give oneself – it’s an offer of total availability. When God called out to Moses from the burning bush, Moses replied, “Hineni!” And you know what assignment he was given, and what happened next.  When God approached Abraham to ask him to offer his only son as a sacrifice , Abraham responded, “Hineni!” not knowing what God was about to ask. God c...

My Surgery Story, No I’m Not Being Dramatic

Image
My Surgery Story, No I’m Not Being Dramatic This story, my story, might be too much information, but these things need to be talked about To understand where my mind and body were feeling at the time, we have to go back to May 2018, one year before my surgery. My family and I were living in Iwakuni, Japan near the Marine Corps Air Station for my husband’s job.  I had been feeling off and that something wasn’t quite right. Was it my IUD? This was my third one and it just had not been the same experience as the first two. I made an appointment with the GYN for a routine mammogram since I was 41-year-old. The GYN didn’t see me, but sent his Corpsman, a Marine medical specialist, instead. We talked, and I explained everything from how I wasn’t feeling myself, that I was fatigued, had hormonal imbalances with frequent episodes of crying for no reason, and horrible migraines. My migraines suddenly progressed from a couple per year to one or two a month.  The Corpsman went bac...

Talk on "leadership"

Image
This talk was given at a women's leadership training event. The BYU commencement address from 12/14/07 was used as inspiration In the business world the term servant leader is used and refers to someone who serves as opposed to simply being in front and leading.  In scouting there is a phrase, rocking chair scoutmaster.  this is a type of leadership that allows the scout to lead and the adult to guide.  In this address it refers to a disciple-leader who ministers and serves.  someone who is called to lead as Christ leads.  The kind of leader that builds, lifts and inspires through love and devotion.  I believe this type of leader takes the servant leader and the rocking chair scoutmaster to a whole new level.  This is the kind of leader we should strive to be. The Savior and his life are perfect examples.  This address breaks this down in to three principles:  example, vision and love.  I'm going to focus on example.  We have...
